A Glimmer In A Day

          A lonely glimmer
giving hope, peace and freedom
   Someday day you will fade.

SHADOWS

As the dewey drops of golden honey

                                  drip
drop
drip
hang
from the perfect marigold trees
I wonder
I sit
I wait
I don't wait for someone or something
I wait
for
YOU

What losing hope is like

The gray skies cover the land

like soldiers guarding over peace and hope.
However not protecting
not shielding

Tormenting

Taking from its home
Abandoning all its been taught

Forgive
Forget

If you do as GOD intended you will be reconciled

NO

I refuse
is this what I am meant to be?

Evil has become me
and evil has consumed me

Some say you can change your fate

I sat my fate changed me.

Global Warming

Global Warming

Global warming by definition is a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons and other pollutants.
We live in the Troposphere. Next is the Stratosphere (where the ozone layer is). Then is Mesosphere and at the top is Thermosphere. Here’s how the layers work:--
The sun is above all the air layers. If there were no layers of air, the sun would burn our Earth. Having the sun burning directly would be bad for all living things so our ozone is basically the only reason we continue to live but humans are taking away our safety.
Humans are affecting global warming more than ever now. More cars in the city means more car exhaust, which is toxic to all life on earth. All the smoking people do adds to the pollution. Big factories release extremely toxic fumes directly into the air. Global warming is being greatly overlooked and it should stop.
Humans aren’t the only ones affected by global warming. Glaciers are melting. Glaciers are on mountain tops and not only is the melting of glaciers dangerous, it is taking away the homes of the animals like polar bears and seals. This can cause avalanches and other natural disasters.
There’s no turning back now. Though our ozone layer is disappearing, maybe we can do something to help. Try walking short distances instead of driving there and we not only save the lives of our future generations, but we are saving money in the process.

Deforestation and Our Effect on Nature

By Brianna Johnson

Humans. We are the living species of the Homo sapiens and we have dominated the Earth. We are the kings of the jungle and the creators of the fate of our environment. Yet, while we create our lives more affluently and profoundly, we are destroying our home. We destroy our home by polluting the air, throwing trash into the oceans and most importantly clear cutting forests. Clear cutting is the act of uniformly cutting down trees and completely wiping out forests. Clear cutting destroys the habitats of animals and it also affects our lives. This isn't another nature lover’s “state the problem” essay. This is to bring to light our problem and come forth with a solution or it can be persuasion for you to realize how we all can do better helping our planet.

According to the World Wildlife Foundation, forests cover at least 31% of the land on our planet. Forests are essential to our environment and they are beneficial to both humans and animals. They produce oxygen, a vital ingredient to all forms of life. They also provide homes to animals and humans. Most of the world's endangered species live in the forest and more than 1.6 billion people rely on forests for clean water, food, clothing, traditional medicine and shelter. However, these benefits are put in jeopardy by the act of deforestation. Deforestation is the broad umbrella that covers the act of unlawful tree removal. Deforestation can range from igniting wildfires, clear cutting, logging for timber and degradation which is the act of damaging or ruining something.  Every year, 46 to 58 thousand square miles of forest are removed. That is about the size of 36 football fields back to back. In the Amazon, more than 17% of the forest has been cut down in the last 50 years. Clear cutting and deforestation not only destroys the benefits of nature for us humans but, it contributes to one of the biggest effects humans have on our planet; Global Warming.

Global Warming is the observed rise in the Earth’s average temperature over the course of centuries. Scientists have observed that the Earth’s temperature has been getting warmer every few centuries. Part of this problem is the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Plants, more specifically trees are essential to the environment. They take in the carbon dioxide we breathe during photosynthesis and they hold the carbon in plant tissues. However, plants only go through photosynthesis and the normal respiratory system when they are living and healthy. The disadvantage to cutting down trees is that there are less trees to take in carbon. Clear cutting an entire forest leads to carbon being emitted into the atmosphere. Carbon is released into the atmosphere when wood burns or decays. In deforestated areas or areas with no trees, the area becomes hotter due the lack of trees to protect the ground from the sun’s scorching rays. And while us humans benefit from the space created as an effect of deforestation, we endanger the air that we need to breathe. And for this reason, we need to examine the effect we have on our earth and find solutions to our overwhelming problem.

As inhabitants of our earth, we need to preserve our planet,  protect our planet and stop trying to pacify the problem. When awareness of a problem is brought to light, precautions are taken in effort to solve it. Some of the key issues with the act of deforestation are its deadly effects to the environment. Like endangering animals by taking away their homes, and polluting our air. Possible solutions to the problems are pretty clear. The main reasons for deforestation are as followed

  1. Agriculture
  2. Logging
  3. Urbanization
  4. Mining

There are many ways to solve these problems. One is making laws to ban the amount of trees that fall every year. Government officials should create laws banning deforestation and other lodging activity because of its unlawful effects. Another solution is controlling the consumer market by using alternatives to wood and lumber. Without the proper people to speak out against deforestation, the problem will increase. For every person who doesn’t speak out against deforestation, a tree falls. A helpless symbol of imprisonment to our faulty actions. As the great children’s author Dr. Seuss said;

“I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues."

Paint The Sky

Paint the Sky
-Cecelia Blake

If you ask me to paint a picture
I would probably paint the sky
Using all the colors
That you and i see through our eyes
The day would never end
At least that is how i see it
because the sky is endless

City Filth

City Filth
By, Cecelia Blake

The day was cold
colder than the winter
winter when it was mid december
the frosty bite
made me want to bawl out all my eyes
the day progressed to a warmth that was just like
a cup of tea that had been left out for at least seven minutes
it felt awkward to drink; to take in
the snow would not melt due to a thick, solid layer of of city filth and waste

that lay on top

Twilight

Twilight

-no place at day is the same at night-

the moon rose          i went out, i couldn’t stay away
but i was awake           i needed to go to the garden
reading prose          before the light of day

the stars were winking          the water lapping
at me through the window          i dove, greetingly
i was thinking        the waves slapping

oh, the night was calling          the light was queer
should i go out?          as i gasped for breath
the scene was appalling          someone was near

the trees were shifting          twas my mother,
the leaves waving at me                      in a gown of red
their branches lifting
she said to me softly
 “go to bed”

Sweet Darkness

Oh snow, so white so sweet so pure
you are the most beautiful I know for sure
Naive, and innocent, you are so fair
But what is in you, I'm not aware
you look as if you hide a secret
a burden if you will
something so deep and dark
that is only there to kill

Oh snow, so sweet so white so lonely
I feel that you are the one and only
you dance, sing, you most beautiful thing
but when I feel you I get a burning sting

You're daggers that dig, like the lonely man on the corner
dreaming of a swig
a swig of poison and bad judgment
and freedom that will come
you blindly walk and freely talk
when people go and watch to stare
but the only thing they ever see
is you ripping out your hair

So this is it a simple ode
the only thing I hope showed
Naive and innocent you are so fair
but what is in you I do not care.

How do Humans Affect the Environment?

Years of thoughtless exploitation of nature by man has led to terrible things, like deforestation, pollution, climate change, reduction of the ozone layer and so much more.
Pollution is one of the terrible effects that humans have on the environment.  Pollution is increasing around the world and results in loss of biodiversity which is the variety of life in the world or in a certain habitats or ecosystems.  Vehicles, trains and planes let out toxic gases that include particles that cause cancer and irritants, creating air pollution. Humans have also dumped large amounts of substances that are harmful to plants and animals, onto crops and then the chemicals migrate into groundwater and bodies of water, poisoning ecosystems. Plants and animals die from exposure to pollutants such as excess nutrients from chemical fertilizers and other harmful chemicals.
Another terrible effect that humans have on the environment is climate change.  Climate change or global warming refers to the increase in the temperatures of the earth due to release of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane from industries and vehicles. This event is causing glaciers to melt at an alarming rate.  Even the polar ice caps are melting at a faster rate than they can form. The result is an increase in sea level, and it creates a danger of drowning the low-lying areas. Some of the areas that may go under the sea if the sea levels keep increasing include Bangladesh, parts of Africa and even major cities like London and New York.
My last example of how humans affect the environment is the reduction of the ozone layer.  The stratosphere has a layer of ozone that protects us from the harmful ultraviolet also known as UV, rays of the sun. Exposure to these rays cause skin cancer and cataracts which is a medical condition where the lens of the eye becomes increasingly opaque, resulting in blurred vision. However, the ozone layer filters out the dangerous UV rays from sunlight as it enters the earth's atmosphere. The man-made chemicals are released in the atmosphere. As these chemicals are released, they rise into the atmosphere and break down the ozone molecules that form the ozone layer. There is an ozone hole in the Antarctic stratosphere that is causing concern to environmentalists all over the world. Because of the ozone holes in the upper atmosphere, the Earth receives excessive UV radiation from the sun. This is harmful for trees and plants and for animals and human beings who depend on plants. The UV rays can destroy a certain type of bacteria known as Cyanobacteria that are important for a number of economically important crops. Researchers are even predicting that excess level of UV rays could lead to the death of the phytoplankton's, that are an important component of the food web of the oceans.

In conclusion humans make such a big impact on this world and we are changing it for the worse. Human survival depends on the health of the ecosystem. An ecosystem is made up of groups of plants, animals and other organisms in a particular area that interact with each other and their surrounding environment.  Humans threaten ecosystems by producing waste, damaging habitats and removing too many species without giving the ecosystem time to naturally regenerate.  So basically along with killing so many parts of the environment humans are also killing themselves.

Buffalo Winter Haiku

Alone, dark, cold, still
Waiting, listening, no sound
Can you hear the cold?

Returning from the White World

The sun, making its way to our view
Working its attempt to warm the earth
As the snow slowly melts, slipping away
Our earth returning from the white world

As we start taking off our winter coats
Pack our hats and gloves for the year
Shedding our winter skin
As we step into spring, the sun is here to stay
